Blocked drain symptoms tell you where to start, but recurring faults need evidence. Restore safe flow first, then use CCTV and locating when roots or pipe damage may change the repair decision.
Stop adding water
Avoid flushing toilets, running taps, using washing machines or emptying baths while wastewater is rising. Every litre entering the system can worsen the overflow.
Keep people and pets away
Sewage can carry harmful microorganisms. Keep the affected area isolated, avoid direct contact and do not let children or pets enter pooled wastewater.
Do not open inspection points
A chamber or cap can be under pressure and release sewage. Leave access work to someone with the right equipment and protective gear.
Avoid chemical drain cleaner
Chemicals may not reach a main-line blockage and can create an additional hazard for anyone opening or jetting the drain.
Send clear information
Tell the specialist your suburb, the fixtures affected, where water is appearing, whether the outside gully is overflowing and whether this has happened before. Send photos or video if it is safe.
After flow is restored
Ask what likely caused the blockage and whether CCTV is needed. A recurring main-line problem should not be treated as a complete repair without checking for roots or pipe damage.
