Blocked drain symptoms tell you where to start, but recurring faults need evidence. Restore safe flow first, then use CCTV and locating when roots or pipe damage may change the repair decision.
1. Water drains more slowly
A sink, shower or floor waste that gradually slows is often the first visible sign of restricted flow. One slow fixture may have a local obstruction; several slow fixtures suggest the problem may sit farther down the drainage line.
2. Drains gurgle or bubble
Gurgling can occur when air is displaced by water struggling past a restriction. Note which fixture makes the noise and what other fixture was being used at the time—this pattern helps narrow the affected branch.
3. Water returns through another fixture
If flushing a toilet makes a shower bubble, or a washing machine discharge appears in a floor waste, the shared downstream line may not be carrying flow normally. Stop adding water if levels continue to rise.
4. The outside gully overflows
An overflowing relief gully is a strong sign of a sewer restriction. Keep children and pets away from wastewater and arrange professional help promptly.
5. Odours keep returning
Persistent sewage or stagnant-water smells can accompany partial blockages, trapped waste or a drainage defect. Repeated deodorising does not identify the cause.
6. The same blockage comes back
A recurring blockage can point to roots, cracked pipework, displaced joints or a section holding debris. CCTV inspection after clearing can show whether the problem is structural.
7. Several fixtures fail together
When toilets, sinks and floor wastes become slow at the same time, treat it as a possible main-line problem. Minimise water use and call a drain specialist before an overflow develops.
What to tell the drain specialist
Share your suburb, which fixtures are affected, when the symptoms started, whether wastewater is rising and whether the line has blocked before. Photos or a short video on WhatsApp can help communicate the urgency.
